The book examines the friendships and rivalries between four pairs of 19th and 20th century artists (in the following non-chronological order): Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning/5().
